Creating a Culture of Belonging

At Dollar Tree, we believe everything starts with people. How we treat one another—from our associates and leaders to our customers and communities—matters most. We also believe that when people feel free to be themselves, they’re better able to connect, contribute, and thrive. That sense of belonging strengthens our teams, deepens our relationships, and helps us serve our communities with care and respect.

Making People Our Priority

From our associates to our customers and the communities we serve, treating people with dignity, respect, and a sense of belonging is at the heart of our values. It all begins with people. We believe that when our team members feel genuinely valued and supported, they have the foundation to grow, thrive, and deliver exceptional service. By empowering our associates, we strengthen the connections we build with our customers and deepen our impact in the neighborhoods we call home.

Fostering a Culture of Belonging

We strive to build and support a workforce where our individual differences are valued and respected. We also develop our policies, practices, and partnerships to prioritize fair and ethical treatment for all.

Focusing on belonging makes us a better organization — we constantly seek ways to connect more effectively with one another, our customers, and the communities we serve. We aim to provide all associates with career development opportunities in a safe, positive, and professional work environment. We work hard to attract the best talent, regardless of race, sex, or other characteristics, and engage them through growth and development.

Developing Our Mindset of Inspiring Belonging

We’re committed to fostering a culture where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued. We strengthen our culture of belonging by offering educational opportunities both in person, at locations across the country, and virtually through our communication and collaboration platforms, where every associate has a voice.

Partnering with Colleges and Universities

Keeping a pulse on top talent across numerous college campuses, we partner with various educational institutions nationwide to offer scholarships, internships, programming, and on-campus events that raise awareness of career opportunities within our organization. We strive to showcase our culture of belonging and demonstrate that everyone is welcome, regardless of background.

Our Associates Embrace
Our Culture of Belonging

Recognizing Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage

In celebration of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, our Asian American and Pacific Islander League Associate Resource Group hosts a series of educational and engaging events. Throughout the month, associates participate in professional development opportunities, join in interactive sessions with our field teams exploring the rich cultures of AAPI countries, and hear from special guest speakers who share insights on heritage and leadership.

We are proud to serve and support many AAPI communities across the country and remain committed to honoring the cultures, contributions, and voices that enrich our workplace and the neighborhoods we serve.

Honoring Our Veterans

Each November, we come together to honor and thank those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. Led by our Veterans Engaging Together in Service (VETS) Associate Resource Group and joined by members of the Color Guard, we proudly raise the American flag, recognizing the sacrifices of our veterans and celebrating the freedoms their service has made possible.

As part of this meaningful tradition, our own veteran and Chief Information Officer, Bobby Aflatooni, presents Dollar Tree Challenge Coins to veteran associates and to the families of team members currently deployed, symbolizing our deep appreciation and ongoing support.

Commemorating
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We proudly celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through meaningful educational events in partnership with our Black Advocate Alliance (BAA) Associate Resource Group. As the presenting sponsor of the Urban League of Hampton Roads’ Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Awards, we recognize individuals making a positive impact in their communities.

At our headquarters in Chesapeake, VA, each year we host an educational MLK Day session for associates, reflecting on Dr. King’s enduring message of justice and unity. We also have the honor of supporting and sponsoring MLK Day events in communities across the country.

Inspiring Belonging Through Our Associate Resource Groups

Our Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) are associate-led communities that help cultivate a culture of belonging across Dollar Tree. Open to all associates and supported by executive sponsors, these groups provide space for connection, learning, and understanding.

Our ARGs include:

  • Asian American and Pacific Islander League
  • Black Advocate Alliance
  • Champions for Women
  • Hispanic Heritage Network
  • Pride (LGBTQ+)
  • Veterans Engaging Together in Service

Through these groups, we develop programming that celebrates the varied cultures of our associates and customers, fosters conversations, and provides education and resources on topics that matter. Together, we’re building a workplace where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
