Creating a Culture of Belonging

At Dollar Tree, Inc., we believe everything starts with people. From our associates to our leaders to the communities we serve, how we treat people matters most. We also believe when we are free to be ourselves, we are better able to connect with each other, our customers, and our communities.

Making People Our Priority

From our associates to our customers to those in the communities we serve, treating people like they matter and belong is central to our company value of serving with accountability. It all starts with people. We believe that offering our people an environment where they feel distinctly valued offers space for them to truly thrive.

Fostering a Culture of Belonging

We work to build and support a workforce where our individual differences are respected and appreciated. We also develop our policies, practices and partnerships to prioritize fair and ethical treatment for all.

A focus on belonging makes us a better organization – we are always looking for ways to better connect with one another, our customers and the communities we serve. We strive to provide all associates with career development opportunities in a safe, positive and professional work environment. We work hard to attract the best talent, regardless of race, sex or other characteristic, and to keep them engaged through growth and development.

Developing our Mindset of Inspiring Belonging

We reinforce our culture of Belonging through events and learning opportunities both in person in various locations across the country and virtually through our Workplace communication and collaboration platform where everyone has a voice.

Partnering with Colleges & Universities

Keeping a pulse on the best and brightest talent across a myriad of college campuses, we partner with a broad range of educational institutions, including local Hampton Roads area Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to provide scholarships, internships and programming and on-campus events to create awareness of career opportunities within our organization. We aim to showcase our Culture of Belonging and to demonstrate that all are welcome, regardless of background.

Our Associates Embrace and Celebrate
Our Culture of Belonging

Celebrating Hispanic Heritage

Our Hispanic Heritage Network Associate Resource Group hosts a variety of events to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month.  As part of a month-long celebration in partnership with URBE University in Miami and the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility (HACR) we offered cultural education opportunities and an interactive panel discussion on professional development for associates. We’re proud to serve many Spanish-speaking communities across the country.

Honoring our Veterans

Each November our team expresses gratitude to those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Led by our VETS Associate Resource Group and joined by members of the Color Guard, we raise the American flag to recognize the immeasurable sacrifices made by our veterans and to appreciate the freedoms we hold dear because of their selfless dedication.  Here one of our own Veterans and Chief Information Officer, Bobby Aflatooni, presented Dollar Tree Challenge Coins to our veteran associates, and families of our deployed service members.

Commemorating
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

We proudly celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with events presented in collaboration with our Black Advocate Alliance Associate Resource Group. We serve as the presenting sponsor for the Urban League of Hampton Roads’ Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Community Leaders Awards event, and host a company MLK Day celebration at our headquarters in Chesapeake, VA. We’re also honored to sponsor MLK Day events in communities we serve around the country.

Inspiring Belonging through our Associate Resource Groups

Our Associate Resource Groups (ARGs) are associate-led communities that foster a culture of Belonging. Our ARGs – including Asian American and Pacific Islander League, Black Advocate Alliance, Champions for Women, Hispanic Heritage Network, Pride (LGBTQ+) and VETS, Veterans Engaging Together in Service – are open to all associates and supported by executive sponsors. Together we develop programming to celebrate the varied cultures of our associates and the customers we serve, create safe spaces for learning and understanding, and provide resources and guidance on relevant topics.
